Access and facilities

Jewry Wall Museum welcomes all visitors, and has some additional support on site for those with disabilities, their helpers and official carers.

Café & Shop

  • Our reception, shop, and café are located on the accessible upper ground floor by the Museum entrance.
  • There is a range of Cafe seating and tables, including sofas and chairs both with and without arms.
  • Highchairs are available in the café for our younger visitors.
  • There is a buggy store available for pushchairs and prams.
  • Lockers are provided for secure storage.

 

Toilets

  • Accessible toilets and a Changing Places Toilet are available on the upper ground ground floor near the café. For more information on Changing Places Toilets, visit changing-places.org.
  • Accessible toilets are also located on the lower ground floor near the main exhibition hall
  • There is also an accessible toilet on the first floor of the short wing next to Room I.

 

Accessibility

  • The building is fully accessible for wheelchair users.
  • The museum also has a wheelchair available at reception upon request. Please book in advance by contacting e: [email] or t: [phone number].
  • Portable perching gallery stools are available that can be used as walking aids and temporary seating within the exhibition. Please ask at reception if you would like to borrow a gallery stool.

 

The Exhibition experience

  • The exhibition begins on the upper ground floor with an immersive video and audio introduction to Roman Leicester, featuring 3D projection. This experience runs every 15 minutes and lasts about 7 minutes. If you miss your slot, we will try to accommodate you in the next available session but this is not guaranteed on busy days.
  • The main exhibition continues on the lower ground floor, accessible via lift and stairs. It features Roman artefacts, large mosaics, printed text, 5 tactile interactives, and 13 pieces of audio & video.

Visually Impaired Guests
The majority of the exhibition is made up of visual and text panels and includes some video content. Guests are able to bring carers to assist.

Hearing Impaired Guests
There is a hearing loop at reception for visitors using hearing aids and guests are able to bring carers to assist them who can enter free of charge.

Some of the exhibits include audio content, and most of these are accompanied by subtitles on screen.

Wheelchair Using Guests
The entrance and exhibition have level pathways, however the 2nd Century ruins are not fully accessible. There are lifts to access both the Upper Ground and Lower ground Floor and both the mezzanine floors of the East Wing. 

We are also committed to making our websites accessible, in accordance with the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018.

Our exhibition and facilities are designed to be as accessible as possible to our disabled guests but if you have suggestions for improvements, please do let us know.

A visit to the Jewry wall Museum will last on average about two hours, most of this time visitors will be required to stand whilst making their way around the exhibition and Roman ruins. However there is some seating available in the museum and benches donated by The Friends of Jewry Wall Museum outside in the ruins; and we have the portable perching gallery stools for those that need to rest, we also have a large seating area in the Jewry Wall Café on the upper ground floor.

Accessible Parking

Disabled Car Parking: Council-run city centre car parks offer free parking for blue badge holders. These can be found on the council’s car parking web pages. There are a few on-street parking spaces for blue badge holders is available at Greyfriars and Applegate.

Shopmobility: Leicester has a free loan service providing scooters, powerchairs and wheelchairs available to anyone who struggles to get around the city centre. Membership is required in order to use the scheme, it is a free scheme and can be used immediately after joining.
